October 25- October 29, 2010. . . back to fall galleries page

Oct 25, 2010

Rain and fog. And plenty of it! But we've had so many lovely days this season that a little wet weather is alright. This photo was taken along the Parkway near Rough Ridge as the clouds were breaking up along the peaks. You can see that much of the foliage at this elevation has already dropped from the trees.

More fog today. Here's a view from the hill across from the Visitor Center. The oak in the foreground is showing a rich burgundy, while a stubborn tree in the background insists on hanging on to its green even this late in the season. Despite that single tree (and there may be a few more), the leaf season is coming to a close at Blowing Rock's elevation.

The fog was still hanging around this morning, and then we had quite a downpour. But once it cleared a little, the evening was really beautiful. Today's image was taken from the terrace at the Meadowbrook Inn. I love the way the light was hitting the hills. You can see from this photo that most of the trees have dropped their leaves and the color that remains is the richer color of late fall.

321Today was unseasonably warm, but I didn't really hear anyone complaining. After the fog and overall wet of the last few days, it was a welcome respite. As the clouds cleared, we were all treated to a spectacular sunset. Today's photo was taken about three miles south of Blowing Rock. There is still plenty of fall foliage down in the valleys here, but I think it is outdone by the sky in this instance.

I think it's safe to say that the leaf season has come to an end here in Blowing Rock. There are still some trees that bear a good number of leaves, all of them rich and deep in color. Burgundies, umbers, and sienna colors are common now, as well as lots of leaves crunching underfoot. Today's image is from Main Street, and it's one of the last trees to hold so many leaves. This oak just looked so beautiful against the blue sky that I had to take a picture.

This scene (around the corner from the above oak) is more common now in the Blowing Rock area:

As the season has come to an end here, this is our last photo for the 2010 daily galleries. We will still continue to post photos from events and Blue Ridge scenes to our Facebook page. Snow images will be posted as well. Check it out!
