Road Project & Detour Information

NC Dot Begins US 321 Widening in Caldwell County

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is widening U.S. 321 in Caldwell County, from Kirby Mountain Road to Blackberry Road, between Lenoir and Blowing Rock. The 6.57-mile stretch will be widened to two lanes in each direction.  NCDOT is making every effort to minimize motorists’ inconveniences by imposing the following construction restrictions:

  • The only times the road may be completely closed for construction are on Tuesdays and Thursdays between noon and 2 p.m. Construction is permitted at other times, but must not delay traffic for more than 15 minutes. Although the road may be closed during these times, the construction schedule may allow for the road to be open.
  • To allow rush hour and holiday traffic to flow smoothly, lane closures are not permitted between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, nor during holiday and major event travel times.
During the road closings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please use the following detour route:
  • Take N.C. 18 to U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro. Follow U.S. 421 north to U.S. 321 in Boone.
  • U.S. 321 leads to Blowing Rock.

The project is expected to be complete in August 2008.  For more information regarding the construction work, call 877.750.4636 (INFO).
