artinpark5Now in its second half-century, Blowing Rock’s Art in the Park, a monthly May through October Saturday event, showcases craftspeople and artisans from all over the Southeast. More than 35,000 people will attend the shows this year, choosing from handcrafted jewelry, pottery, fiber, glass, photography, painting and more.

This year’s featured artists by month are as follows:

May: Chris Boone, Matthews, N.C., wood

June: Jim Spires, Wooster, Ohio, clay

July: Joanna White, Mocksville, N.C., fiber

August: Obayana Ajanaku, Decatur, Ga., jewelry

September: Jean Yao, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., basketry

October: Judson Guerard, Bakersville, N.C., glass

Prices for objects, from a handmade postcard to a large piece of furniture, range from $5 to $5000.

Art in the Park Saturday dates are May 17, June 14, July 19, August 16, September 6 and October 4. Events are held on the top level of the American Legion parking facility on Wallingford Street. Free shuttles to the site are available from the Tanger Shoppes on the Parkway and the Food Lion grocery on Highway 321.

There will be free Sunday afternoon Concerts in the Park May through September. For dates and information, see our event calendar at the “events” link above.

Art in the Park is planned and administered by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Modern Automotive. Modern Toyota and Modern Subaru in Boone will raffle off a $100 gift card each month that can be used to purchase items from the featured artist at that month’s Art in the Park.
