Grandfather Mountain                             back to main autumn page

On a trip to the Blowing Rock area in the High Country, you can’t miss Grandfather Mountain. Globally recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, Grandfather Mountain is open to the public, and invites you to “experience nature on a whole different level.”  Come see black bears, river otters, eagles, panthers, and deer in their natural habitats. Grandfather is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge, and towers over the surrounding area. The view is incomparable. Upon his visit to the summit, John Muir said, “I couldn't hold in, and began to jump about and sing and glory in it all.” You will, too.

From the Mile High Swinging Bridge, experience a 360-degree perspective of the glory of Fall in the High Country. As you cross the bridge, you will hear the wind whistle through the steel rails and floorboards. It’s cool, crisp, and will put a rosy glow on anyone’s cheeks. On the other side, you can clamber around on the rocks. Be careful, though; there are no ropes or rails to tarnish the view. Grandfather Mountain is located on Hwy 221, and is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
