About the Artists

The Catalinas

Since the Catalinas formed in Charlotte in late 1957,  over 60 accomplished guitarists, keyboardists, trumpet players, drummers, bass players & singers have been a part of the band. Most have come from communities along the Interstate 77 corridor from Statesville to Charlotte.  Gary Barker, a Statesville resident, who plays guitar & sings and owns the band now, started with the band in 1965, & is still with the band after all these years. "I just did not get into my head that I was getting paid to do something I love." Barker attributes the band’s long success to the ongoing popularity of beach music & the tunes the band has composed, Particularly "Summertime’s Calling Me" in the 70s.

The band had its down moments including the death of lead vocalist, Tommy Black in a plane crash in 1968. Gary Barker has been the band’s glue, keeping it going even when rock & roll in the late 60s & early 70s threatened to submerge the Catalinas & beach music. The Catalinas had little choice but to play their share of Crosby, Still, Nash & Grand Funk Railroad. "You either played it or you didn’t get any work," said Gary Barker.

Band of Oz

band of ozThe Band of Oz was formed in 1967 as a part-time band playing fraternity parties and high school proms all over the South. In 1977 the band went on the road full time. Since that time the band has made an exceptional name for itself throughout the Southeast by playing the top clubs and corporate parties, and getting excellent reviews along the way. For several years the group has been a guest on most of the major beach concerts in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia.

The Band of Oz is one of the most successful groups in the Southeast, and continues to get the very best reviews from the top people in the entertainment business. The band now features a full horn section to total a dynamic eight-member group. They still perform well over two-hundred shows per year for corporate events, festivals, concerts, wedding receptions, and many other public and private events.

Owen Campbell

owen campbellBluesman Owen Campbell has honed his chops steadily touring in Australia and Europe. However, it was his appearance on Australia's Got Talent that put him in the national spotlight.

Campbell earned runner-up honors on the show and audiences responded enthusiastically for The Pilgrim (his follow-up to Sunshine Road) by placing it high on the charts and filling venues around the country. Campbell brings a deep repertoire to performances on his U.S. tour of clubs and festivals. His smoldering guitar work runs from bluesy riffs to soulful finger picking to lap steel guitar solos using a shot glass slide. His eclectic mix of rock-influenced songwriting results from his early years of busking on the streets of cities across Australia and Europe.

Campbell first strummed a guitar at age 9, a gift from his musician father that launched his musical journey. The 30-year-old Campbell’s strongest musical influences were blues-rock musicians from America and the U.K. – and his own household.

His debut album, The Pilgrim, was released in June. He currently has three albums in the Top Ten on iTunes in Australia.
